A shackle is the smallest component in most lifting assemblies and the one most often chosen carelessly. It connects your chain, sling or hoist to the load — which means it carries everything.
Two questions decide which shackle you need: what shape, and what pin.
Shape: D-shackle or bow shackle?
D-shackle (also called a dee shackle, chain shackle or H-shackle, depending on the market) has a narrow, straight-sided body. The narrow shape keeps the load aligned along the pin axis, which is exactly what you want for a single, straight pull — one chain leg, one sling, one direction.
Bow shackle (also called an anchor shackle or harp shackle) has a wide, rounded bow. That extra width lets you connect multiple slings or chain legs into one point, and it handles loading from slightly varying angles better than a D-shackle does.
The trade-off is straightforward:

Rule of thumb: one connection, one direction → D-shackle. Two or more legs meeting at one point → bow shackle.
Pin: screw pin or bolt type?
Screw pin — threaded pin you tighten by hand or with a spanner. Fast to fit and remove. Suitable for connections you make and break regularly, provided the pin cannot rotate loose under load.
Bolt, nut and cotter pin — the pin is secured with a nut and a split pin. Slower to fit, but it cannot vibrate loose. This is the type you want for permanent or semi-permanent assemblies, and for anything exposed to vibration: vehicles, machinery, offshore.
If a shackle stays in place for weeks, use bolt type. If you open it several times a day, a screw pin is more practical.
Working load limits
WLL depends on body diameter. These are typical values for grade 6 forged steel shackles:

Always match the shackle to the total load at that connection point — not to the capacity of one sling leg. A bow shackle taking two 2-tonne legs sees up to 4 tonnes.
What "certified" actually means
This is where cheap shackles fail. A certified lifting shackle carries permanent markings on the body:
- WLL in tonnes
- Manufacturer identification — name or code
- Batch or traceability code
- CE marking, as required under the Machinery Directive
The relevant European standard is EN 13889 for forged steel shackles used in lifting. A shackle without these markings has no verifiable capacity, cannot be traced to a production batch, and will be rejected at the first inspection.
That matters beyond compliance. In most European jurisdictions, lifting equipment must be inspected periodically by a competent person. Unmarked hardware fails that inspection immediately — so buying uncertified shackles costs you twice.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
Side loading. A shackle is designed for load along the pin axis. Loading it sideways — with the pin acting as a hinge — can cut the WLL by half or more. If your geometry pulls sideways, use a bow shackle or reposition the connection.
Mixing pin and body. Never fit a pin from one shackle into the body of another, even if it physically threads in. Pin and body are manufactured and rated as a matched pair.
Leaving the pin part-tightened. A pin that is not fully seated carries a fraction of the rated load. Tighten fully, every time, and secure it against vibration where the application calls for it.
Inspection before use
Check four things:
- Body deformation — any widening or bending means the shackle has been overloaded. Remove it from service.
- Pin thread — damaged threads prevent full tightening.
- Wear at the crown — the inside of the bow wears where the sling or chain bears. Measure if in doubt.
- Markings — still legible? If not, capacity cannot be verified.
Shackles are inexpensive. Replace them well before they become marginal.
